Dr. John Douillard, DC received his doctorate (with honors) in Chiropractic at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1984. As an Ironman triathlete, his initial interest was in sports chiropractic. He has provided chiropractic treatment to Olympic and professional athletes including Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova (both wrote forewords for his book Body, Mind and Sport). Dr. Douillard has also provided chiropractic services to NBA's New Jersey Nets Basketball team. In that capacity he designed their nutritional program and was the team chiropractor working in liaison with the strength coach and trainer. His job was to keep the team injury free, which he succeeded in. In fact, when Dr. Douillard was hired by the Nets, they were the most injured team in the NBA. At the end of his full-time season, the Nets were the 3rd least injured team in the NBA.
Dr. Douillard offers Chiropractic Treatment to both athletic and non-athletic patients. Working with athletes demands both rapid and lasting results, as they need to compete tomorrow, not after 20 visits to the chiropractor.
Dr. Douillard uses techniques similar to Active Release Techniques, which is a state of the art soft tissue technique used with professional athletes. He spends at least a half hour with each patient, and 80-90 percent of that time is working on the soft tissue. Dr. Douillard believes that the muscles are what move the bones, and if the muscles are overused or underused, they can go into spasm. When overly tensed, they lose blood supply. Without adequate blood supply the muscles lay down fibrous tissue, rendering them stiff and rigid. This lack of muscular elasticity compromises the blood supply to the joints, and soon they lay down protective fibrous tissue and inflame and irritate the joints, causing pain.
Dr. Douillard diagnoses the muscles that have lost their elasticity and reinstates blood supply to the appropriate muscles and joints. His goal: to achieve 50-80 percent improvement in the first visit, unlike many chiropractors, where you must receive 10-20 adjustments to experience results, . In most cases the condition is resolved in 4-5 visits, depending on how many years the condition has existed.
