In a world where eighty percent of all disease can be attributed to stress it is not surprising that we are attracted to the Ayurvedic herb, Ashwagandha. Winter cherry (in English, Withania somnifera) is sometimes referred to as Indian Ginseng, making reference to its nervous system rejuvenative and tonic actions. Numerous studies have exhibited its anti-stress adaptogenic properties, many of which demonstrated superior adaptogenic properties than that of Ginseng. It is quickly becoming well known as an herb for energy, endurance and stress.
According to Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha balances both the Nervous System (vata = air) and the Musculo-Skeletal System (kapha = earth, water) simultaneously while it increases heat (pitta) in the body. In chronic conditions it is common to see Vata-Kapha imbalances that are usually long standing and difficult to treat. A classic example of such a condition is arthritis, which involves painful, dry joints (a vata condition) along with swollen and inflamed joints (a kapha condition). Ashwagandha would be the medicine of choice in such a condition as it balances both the vata and kapha aspects of this imbalance. Ashwagandha is also indicated in many other conditions that combine vata and kapha imbalances.
Traditionally, Ashwagandha has been used to treat: general debility, arthritis, depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depressed immunity, sexual debility, infertility, memory loss, breathing difficulties, hormonal imbalances and more.
It is used very effectively for insomnia, but not as a sedative. Its rejuvenative and nervous system restorative properties provide the body with the energy (prana), which is needed by the body to settle itself down and sleep. In this way its adaptogenic properties help the body deal with a stress related condition rather than mask it with a sedative.
In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is considered a sweet root. In ancient times herbs were classified by their taste. The sweet taste allows the herb to penetrate into the deeper tissues of the body. The sweet taste would open the tissues rather than constrict them. Very bitter roots would constrict and cleanse but not deeply access and rejuvenate the body like Ashwagandha. Its secondary taste of bitter and astringent would stimulate a deep tissue cleansing and rejuvenation that would not be possible with an aggressive bitter herb. Also because of its sweet taste, Ashwagandha is considered a heavy herb and may be necessary to take it with meals or with ginger to effectively digest it. Toxicity is not usually encountered with Ashwagandha.
By both calming and rebuilding the nervous system this herb exhibits qualities that are perfect for helping those under stress.

It is difficult to detect a B12 deficiency as the symptoms may not appear for some 5-6 years. Another problem is that a serum blood test for B12 is not a foolproof test. The most accurate way to access B12 levels is somewhat unreliable. Vegetarians, seniors, people with poor digestion or folks on long term use of medications are at a higher risk.(1)
When you combine the fact that many people have stopped eating red meat (which is high in B12), that few have really good digestive strength to absorb B12, and that B12 is a large, bulky and hard-to-absorb vitamin, it becomes more understandable as to why this has become a national health issue.

B12 Balances Your Mind and Mood
The main function of B12 is to repair and support the nervous system while maintaining brain chemistry and synthesizing neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and epinephrine. These govern mood, energy, sleep, appetite, drive, motivation, movement, cognition and numerous brain functions.
Studies have shown certain people with "treatment resistant" depression responded well to B12, B6 and folic acid treatment, which also enhanced the effect of antidepressants and helped to protect against side effects.(2) In one study, 50% of the subjects with depression were Vitamin B12 deficient. Without adequate B12 - and its supporting cast of Folic Acid and B6 - the degenerative impact of stress will deplete the nervous system and invite a litany of health concerns related to B12 deficiency. The most common are cardiovascular disease, depression, Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, insomnia, chronic fatigue and a wide range of neurological diseases.
B12 Keeps Your Heart StrongLow levels of B12, Folic acid and B6 are linked to high homocysteine levels, which cause arterial plaque, heart disease and stroke. This relationship is so strong that measuring homocysteine levels is considered one of the tests to measure B12 levels.
While its ability to support mood, sleep, energy and a healthy nervous system is amazing, perhaps its most valuable function is related to cardiovascular health. The most active form of B12 - methylcobalamine - is essential for reducing homocysteine into methionine (a naturally occurring amino acid) through a process called methylation. High levels of homocysteine are a well known risk factor for cardiovascular disease(4). As B12, Folic acid and B6 are required for this conversion, they work in concert to lower homocysteine, decrease arterial plaque and fight depression. New studies reveal that high homocysteine levels, which are a marker for heart disease, are also elevated in mood disorders(5). B12 is truly the vitamin for the health of both the heart and mind.
Food Sources of B12
Typically B12 is found in a diet rich in meat, fish, eggs and dairy, which is why vegetarians and vegans are at such great risk for B12 deficiency. Vegetable sources do exist but there are not many. Sea vegetables, brewers yeast, soybeans, hops and alfalfa offer small amounts of B12(3). It is also believed that a healthy large intestine will synthesize B12 naturally, which is why I am such a stickler for restoring optimal digestive health without relying on enzymes, laxatives or a restrictive diet.
Weak Digestion Makes For Poor Absorption of B12
Dietary B12 is released in the stomach by hydrochloric acid (HCL). If the digestive acids are low then B12 absorption is also low. When HCL levels are optimal, the stomach's parietal cells produce a protein called the intrinsic factor. This protein attaches to the free B12 and carries it to the distal part of the small intestine where it is then stored in the liver. As we age, digestive strength typically weakens and the production of the intrinsic factor decreases, causing the utilization of B12 to plummet. While I don't believe this has to happen, seniors are at significant risk for this reason. In Ayurveda, the HCL levels are maintained by good eating habits and the regular use of an herb called Trikatu. Trikatu helps increase HCL production as well as reset the body's ability to produce its own so we don't become dependant on swallowing a pill with every meal for the rest of your life. Take 1 before meals for 3 months and that should enhance the natural HCL production and the production of the B12 dependant intrinsic factor. What Type of B12 is Best?Perhaps the most common form on the market today is cobalamin. It is the most inexpensive but not the most active form. Cobalamine must be converted to methylcobalamin, which is the most active form. For years B12 injections were in fashion for boosting energy. It was understood that absorption of B12 orally in the cobalamin form was low. In fact, some studies showed that people who took cobalamin for years still tested low in B12 .(7)
Today, methylcobalamin exists in a highly absorbable sublingual form. This accomplishes two things that have changed the culture around B12 deficiencies. Because sublingual B12, along with Folic Acid and B6, bypass the digestive system the production of the intrinsic factor - which decreases with age, poor diet and medications - is no longer a factor. Sublingual pathways provide an alternate absorption route for absorbing B12 directly into the blood stream. The issue of this very bulky vitamin getting absorbed in adequate amounts through the distal small intestine is bypassed. In addition, adequate amounts of folic acid, B6 and a mood stabilizing chemical called SAMe are all needed to convert (or methylate) the cobalamin to methylcobalamin. When using the methylcobalamin form sublingually this cumbersome process of activating (or methylating) the B12 is already accomplished. B12, folic acid and B6 also help increase the production of SAMe (S-adenosylmethione), which proved equally effective when compared to western anti-depressant medications (8). The sublingual form of B12 (methylcobalamin) has been proven an effective delivery system for this vitamin. Facts About Optimal B12 Levels
- B12 deficiency causes decreased immunity and decreased natural killer cell activity.(9)
- B12 stimulates the release of melatonin from the pineal gland - the sleep hormone. It helps one get to sleep earlier and wake up earlier because it normalizes sleep cycles.(10)
- Alzheimer's patients have decreased amount of B12 in their cerebral spinal fluid. (11)
- Free radical damage from B12 deficiency and excess MAO-B are linked to Parkinson's Disease(12)
Your Treatment Plan
Recommended Dosage of Sublingual B12 (with Folic Acid and B6) and HCL Support
- I recommend a sublingual B12 with Folic Acid and B6 in the following formula. We carry an excellent Advanced B12 Sublingual.
- B12: 4000 mcg per day sublingual for 1 month. If needed, continue taking 1000mcg per day.
- B6: 20mg per day for 1 month. If needed, continue taking 4mg per day.
- Folic Acid: 1600mcg per day for 1 month. If needed, continue taking 400mcg per day.
- Trikatu - 1 before meals for 3 months to increase the stomaches production of HCL and B12 dependant Intrinsic factor.
Please Note: It is best if B12, B6 and Folic Acid are combined in a sublingual form because they are synergistically active. Each vitamin can be toxic if taken alone at very high levels.

Finally - A Home Treatment for Pain That Really Works!
This past December I experienced a basketball injury to my lower back that had sidelined me until a few weeks ago. I had been trying everything from massage to chiropractic adjustments, deep tissue work, herbs and more. While I always seemed better for a day or two, I was nowhere near ready to step back on the basketball floor. I would have days where I would hobble from patient to patient and I was wondering if the old age thing had finally set in.
Now many of you know I am a chiropractor and pride myself in getting my patients better and out of my office in just three visits. As a result of this philosophy I have worked with many professional athletes over the years, including being the Chiropractor for the New Jersey Nets in the NBA for 2 years.
I spend a half an hour with each patient working on their soft tissue injuries. When a muscle is injured or over used it will go into spasm - we have all felt the wrath of muscle spasms. Well, when a muscle goes into spasm it tightens and squeezes out the blood supply from that muscle.
Lack of Blood Flow Creates Painful Fibrous Tissue
The muscles' response to not having adequate blood due to the spasm is to lay down a protective tissue that doesn't use blood - this is called scar tissue or fibrous tissue. It is kind of like if you don't water your lawn you will get crab grass. Crab grass is a tough version of grass and the body makes its own tough version of soft tissue called fibrous tissue.
When the muscle spasms, it compromises blood supply to the muscle and the joint, then the fibrous tissue sticks or glues the muscle spindles together and makes it more difficult for the muscle to slide and contract. Now with each forced contraction and muscle movement, the muscles' newly laid fibrous tissue is torn and the muscle inflames and pain ensues. These now very tight muscles attach to the associated joints. The natural joint play that pumps blood into the joint capsule is lost the tighter the muscle becomes. Remember, the blood is the lubricant for the muscles and joints. The joint lays down fibrous tissue, the joint play is lost, and with each movement the joint is irritated and inflamed.
The best therapies break down fibrous tissue and reinstate blood supply to the joint and muscle.
In my practice I use a deep tissue technique where I release the fibrous tissue that has glued the muscle spindles together and bring optimal blood flow to the joints and muscle. I do many phone consults for my patients and I am always on the look out for herbs that will accomplish this release of the scar tissue and reinstate optimal blood flow to the muscle and joint. For years I have had good success with herbs like Pain-Free and MSM (which you can read about on my website) because they don't just remove symptoms of pain - they increase blood flow that removes fibrous tissue build up. Lithium Orotate vs other forms of Lithium
Lithium is the most common element used for stabilizing mood swings, mania and depression. Lithium orotate (the lithium salt of orotic acid) is 20 times more bio-active than other lithium salts, allowing a reduction in dosage greatly reducing the likelihood and severity of potential side effects. Each 120 mg capsule provides 4.8 elemental lithium. Lithium Orotate may be effective in treating manic-depressive and bi-polar illness but best avoided by those on a sodium free diet or who are diabetic. NCI Advanced Research Lithium Orotate. Orotates are mineral salts of orotic acid - used by plants and animals to make DNA and RNA. Hans Nieper, a physician and dabbler in offbeat theories of gravitation, used orotates clinically prior to 1980. He thought that orotate salts, being neutrally charged, pass easily through cell membranes. In effect, orotate ferries the mineral atoms into cells and tissues, producing higher concentrations.

Extensive research established that scalp hair element levels are related to human systemic levels. The strength of this relationship varies for specific elements, and many researchers consider hair as the tissue of choice for toxic and several nutrient elements. Unlike blood, hair element levels are not regulated by homeostatic mechanisms. Thus, deviations in hair element levels often appear prior to overt symptoms and can thereby be a valuable preliminary tool for predicting the development of physiological abnormalities.
Why hair?
With respect to its contained elements, hair is essentially an excretory tissue rather than a functional tissue. Hair element analysis provides important information which, in conjunction with symptoms and other laboratory values, can assist the physician with an early diagnosis of physiological disorders associated with aberrations in essential and toxic element metabolism.
As protein is synthesized in the hair follicle, elements are incorporated permanently into the hair with no further exchange or equilibration with other tissues. Scalp hair is easy to sample, and because it grows an average of one to two cm per month, it contains a “temporal record” of element metabolism and exposure to toxic elements.
Nutrient elements including magnesium, chromium, zinc, copper and selenium are obligatory co-factors for hundreds of important enzymes and also are essential for the normal functions of vitamins. The levels of these elements in hair are correlated with levels in organs and other tissues.
Toxic elements may be 200-300 times more highly concentrated in hair than in blood or urine. Therefore, hair is the tissue of choice for detection of recent exposure to elements such as arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, lead, antimony, and mercury. The CDC acknowledges the value of hair mercury levels as a maternal and infant marker for exposure to neurotoxic methylmercury from fish.
Through recent vast improvements in technology, instrumentation, and application of scientific protocols, hair element analysis has become a valuable tool in providing dependable and useful data for physicians and their patients. The U.S. Environmental Protection agency stated in a recent report that “...if hair samples are properly collected and cleaned, and analyzed by the best analytic methods, using standards and blanks as required, in a clean and reliable laboratory by experienced personnel, the data are reliable.” (U.S.E.P.A. 600/4-79-049)
Hair, however, is vulnerable to external elemental contamination by means of certain shampoos, bleaches, dyes, and curing or straightening treatments. Therefore, the first step in the interpretation of a hair element report is to rule out sources of external contamination.
Hair element analysis is a valuable and inexpensive screen for physiological excess, deficiency or maldistribution of elements. While there is a time and place for these enzymes as a medicine for short term use to help your digestion in an emergency, long term use is just not in your best interest. Regular use of digest enzymes weakens your digestion because your body no longer has to do the work itself and you will then become dependant on them. It's similar to exercise - if you stop exercising you start to atrophy and become weak.
Ayurvedic medicine is designed to restore body balance so the body can heal itself without dependence on pills or powders. My goal with all my patients is to get them well, often with the use of herbs. As soon as we reach a clinically effective dose, I start to wean them off that herb so we don’t create such dependencies. Digestive Enzymes are OK for the Short Term and in Small Doses
The issue with enzymes is not that they are "bad" -- they have a place in supporting a digestive imbalance for short periods of time. Like any medicine - you get on it, get better, and then get off. Even if you are taking small dosages of enzymes, this is a sign that your digestion is weak and will only continue to get weaker unless you strengthen it.
The problem is that we are told that our bodies do not make these enzymes after a certain age and they are needed longterm to make up for this lack. I do not believe this.
The digestive system can be reset to produce adequate amounts of enzymes and not need any supplementation for maintaining good digestion. It is the misunderstanding that we need digestive enzymes forever that I am concerned about, as it creates long term dependancy and weakens your digestion. A few years ago I saw a patient that I hadn't seen in about ten years. She told me that she had lost 50 pounds by doing exactly what I had told her to do 10 years ago. Gingerly I asked her, "What exactly did I tell you to do?" She told me I had suggested that she take an herbal formula called Trifala after each meal to gradually lose all the weight you desire.
Honestly, I think my words were embellished upon over the course of time and from the excitement of her success. As I read the notes I made in her chart I noticed that she complained of sluggish digestion and mild constipation that she controlled with avoiding wheat, dairy, soy and nuts.
This is such a common complaint that I see with my patients. I ask them how their elimination is and they almost always say, "Fine." When I ask if they avoid certain foods or eat more of an other to get the elimination working well, I often get a big, "Yes." In my mind this is unacceptable behavior. In nature you never see such a thing. Imagine an elk or deer planning their meals so they stay regular. During each meal the intestinal track produces a certain amount of mucus that helps lubricate the digestive tract. Over time some of this digestive mucus builds up in the digestive track, clogging the little hair like villi that help the body absorb its nutrients.
Trifala, which is an Ayurvedic herbal formula, helps to cleanse the mucus off the digestive villi, making for a more efficient digestive process. This formula has three fruits that support the eliminative process:
- Amalaki is a fruit that supports intestinal repair.
- Bibhitaki pulls the old mucus off the wall.
- Haritaki strengthens the intestinal muscles to contract more efficiently when the bowels need to move.
I should mention that Triphala is NOT a laxative, which is why I feel comfortable using it. It does not create a dependency. Turmeric Prevents Cancer, Alzheimer's and More!

Anti-Cancer ActivityFor thousands of years in Ayurveda a common cooking spice has not only helped protect against cancer, it also: decreases physical pain and liver ailments; increases mental clarity, intestinal health and bile flow, fat metabolism and lowers cholesterol. Today, studies have backed up these claims! Yes, I realize this may sound to good to be true, but scientists are just as amazed as I am as the research on turmeric keeps pouring in. In one study, curcumin, the extract of turmeric, actually suppressed tumor growth better than a standard chemotherapy drug for colon cancer (2). And there are numerous studies showing curcumin's ability to match chemotherapy drugs for breast cancer and leukemia (3). In studies for cancers of the breast, cervix, colon, stomach, liver, blood, skin, ovaries, pancreas and prostate, the extract of turmeric has shown impressive anti-cancer activity in all three stages of cancer development (4). There are just so many studies on the effectiveness of turmeric on cancer that I couldn't begin to list them all. One Indian research team wrote, "Curcumin has emerged as one of the most powerful chemopreventive and anti cancer agents." Recently, in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a very large study revealed that many cancers are not detected during a routine colonoscopy. What was once an insurance plan to screen for colon cancer offering a 90% reduction in the risk of death, now can only afford a 60-70% mortality risk reduction (1). This means that while we should still use colonoscopies as a screening tool - we have to take action to prevent the risk of colon cancer in other ways as well. Protection From Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and StrokeAs I mentioned, turmeric doesn't stop at helping us fight cancer - it seems to be emerging as the new panacea. One research team wrote, "Curcumin appears to possess all the desirable features of a desk-designed, multi-purpose drug." Perhaps, one of our biggest concerns as we age is to somehow protect us from the ravages of Alzheimers Disease. Turmeric has at least 10 neuroprotective actions that are useful in the prevention or treatment of age related neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and stroke (5). As a fat soluble substance turmeric has an affinity for chelating (removing) fat soluble toxins and heavy metals like lead and aluminum out of the deep tissues. Because the brain is predominately fatty tissue, fat soluble toxins accumulate in the brain and cause damage. Turmeric crosses the blood brain barrier where it removes neuro toxins in the brain and boosts natural antioxidants like glutathione and superoxide dismutase that are key in the prevention of disease. It also removes beta amyloid plaque in the brain, which is the leading cause of Alzheimer's disease (6). Decrease Inflammation and Digestive Problems
If I had to highlight only one other property of turmeric - in addition to its anti viral, anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti oxidant properties - I would have to bring your attention to its anti inflammatory properties. Inflammation starts in the gut because it is triggered by the poor assimilation of beneficial nutrients and the inability of the gut to properly break down and dispose of waste. The most common cause of this is stress. Stress receptors line the gut and when we are under lots of stress, it impacts the gut by causing the intestinal mucus membranes to produce excessive reactive mucus. This reactive mucus compromises absorption and detoxification pathways in the gut, leading to congestion in the body's lymphatic system which initiates the inflammatory process. Turmeric heals and repairs the gut, thins the mucus and increases the flow of bile. Bile is responsible for breaking down toxic cancer causing chemical fats as well as nutritional fats that we need. Bile is our body's primary immune response in the gut to emulsify toxic chemicals and other fat soluble toxins that you may have ingested. These include heavy metals, parasites, pesticides, candida, fungi and more. Increase Absorption of Turmeric by 2000%One of the problems with turmeric is that it is fat soluble, which makes it more difficult to absorb. That is why many of the studies have been done on curcumin, which is the extract of turmeric and easier to absorb. So for the past ten years much research has gone into boosting the absorption of turmeric with some good success. The problem I see with turmeric extracts and so-called cutting edge extracts of extracts is that they become something different. In nature they do not exist and are never ingested in such concentrated doses. Such concentrations can act more like drugs and over time have side effects that we may not identify for another 10 years. These extracts may be extremely useful for the treatment of a cancer and disease but such potencies may not be ideal for everyday use.
What is interesting is that in India, curry powder is loaded with turmeric, peppers and spices. Turmeric is added to many dishes in India, and during the cooking process the turmeric is naturally extracted and concentrated. Boiling and cooking helps naturally break down the turmeric in such a way that the absorption of medicinal grade constituents like curcumin are greatly enhanced. In 1998 researchers at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore, India found that turmeric taken with black pepper - a common ingredient in curry- increased the absorption of turmeric by an astonishing 2000%, with no adverse effects! Eating Turmeric Prevents CancerThe average Indian eats about 2-2.5 grams of turmeric a day - that's about 4-6 capsules of Turmeric Plus (a formula of Turmeric and black pepper) - and Indians on average do that everyday of their lives. Interestingly, India has among the lowest rates in the world of prostate, breast, colon and lung cancer. Epidemiologically, scientists are linking their increased intake of dietary turmeric to their low cancer risk. In another study, curry eaters had better cognitive function than non curry eaters, indicating that increasing our dietary intake of turmeric will deliver the clinical benefits of turmeric.
