Tufts University reported that more than 40% of the American population is B12 deficient. They also mentioned that many more people are deficient because many subjects who test normal for B12 actually have a positive therapeutic effect when supplemented with B12. 

It is difficult to detect a B12 deficiency as the symptoms may not appear for some 5-6 years. Another problem is that a serum blood test for B12 is not a foolproof test. To complete the test, add a homecysteine and methyl-malonic urine test. Vegetarians, seniors, people with poor digestion or folks on long term use of medications are at a higher risk.(1)
 
When you combine the fact that many people have stopped eating red meat (which is high in B12), that few have really good digestive strength to absorb B12, and that B12 is a large, bulky and hard-to-absorb vitamin, it becomes more understandable as to why this has become a health issue.

 B12 Balances Your Mind and Mood
The main function of B12 is to  support the nervous system while maintaining brain chemistry and synthesizing neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and epinephrine. These support mood, energy, sleep, appetite, drive, motivation, movement, cognition and numerous brain functions.*   
 
Studies have shown that B12, B6 and folic acid support mood and heart health.(2)*  Without adequate B12 - and its supporting cast of Folic Acid and B6 - the degenerative impact of stress may  invite a litany of health concerns related to B12 deficiency.*

Low levels of B12, Folic acid and B6 are linked to high homocysteine levels, which can contribute to cardio-vascular issues.* This relationship is so strong that measuring homocysteine levels is considered one of the tests to measure B12 levels.* 

While its ability to support mood, sleep, energy and a healthy nervous system is amazing, perhaps its most valuable as support for the  cardiovascular system.* The most active form of B12 - methylcobalamine - is essential for reducing homocysteine into methionine (a naturally occurring amino acid) through a process called methylation. High levels of homocysteine are a  well known risk factor for cardiovascular disease(4)* and  are also elevated in mood issues(5)*.

B12 is  the vitamin for the health of both the heart and mind.
 

Food Sources of B12
Typically B12 is found in a diet rich in meat, fish, eggs and dairy, which is why vegetarians and vegans are at such great risk for B12 deficiency.  Vegetable sources do exist but there are not many. Sea vegetables, brewers yeast, soybeans, hops and alfalfa offer small amounts of B12(3). It is also believed that a healthy large intestine will synthesize B12 naturally, which is why I am such a stickler for restoring optimal digestive health without relying on enzymes, laxatives or a restrictive diet.

Weak Digestion Makes For Poor Absorption of B12
Dietary B12 is released in the stomach by hydrochloric acid (HCL). If the digestive acids are low then B12 absorption is also low.  When HCL levels are optimal, the stomach's parietal cells produce a protein called the intrinsic factor.  This protein attaches to the free B12 and carries it to the distal part of the small intestine where it is then stored in the liver. As we age, digestive strength typically weakens and the production of the intrinsic factor decreases, causing the utilization of B12 to plummet. While I don't believe this has to happen, seniors are at significant risk for this reason.

In Ayurveda, the digestive fire (agni) levels are maintained by good eating habits  an herb called Trikatu.  Trikatu supports digestion  Take 1  15 minutes before meals

What Type of B12 is Best?
Perhaps the most common form on the market today is cobalamin. It is the most inexpensive but not the most active form. Cobalamine must be converted to methylcobalamin, which is the most active form. 

For years B12 injections were in fashion for boosting energy. It was understood that absorption of B12 orally in the cobalamin form was low. In fact, some studies showed that people who took cobalamin for years still tested low in B12.(7)

Today, methylcobalamin exists in a sublingual form. This accomplishes two things that have changed the culture around B12 deficiencies.

Because sublingual B12, along with Folic Acid and B6, bypass the digestive system the production of the intrinsic factor - which decreases with age, poor diet and medications - is not critical.* Sublingual pathways may provide an alternate absorption route for absorbing B12 directly into the blood stream.*

In addition, adequate amounts of folic acid, B6 and a mood stabilizing chemical called SAMe are all needed to convert (or methylate) the cobalamin to methylcobalamin.  When using the methylcobalamin form sublingually this cumbersome process of activating (or methylating) the B12 is already accomplished*.

Please Note: It is best if B12, B6 and Folic Acid are combined  because they are synergistically active.  Each vitamin can be toxic if taken alone at very high levels*.

EDTA, Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid is a weak, synthetic amino acid and perhaps the most well known and often used chelating agent. EDTA has the ability to bind with virtually every metal in the Periodic Table.[2] EDTA is FDA-approved for lead, mercury, aluminum and cadmium toxicity. There is benefit in combining EDTA with other chelators because alone it acts slowly and could potentially lead to redeposition of metals. It is important to replace beneficial minerals such as zinc, copper, iron, cobalt and manganese that are bound by the EDTA.[3]

Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) (Chinese parsley, coriander) suppresses the deposition of lead by chelating the metal.[4] A sorbent prepared from cilantro was found to have good efficiency in removing organic and methyl mercury from aqueous solutions.[5]

Chlorella, green algae has demonstrated the ability to take up toxic metals in its environment decreasing resorption of heavy metals excreted into the gut from the liver-biliary system. Chlorella’s influence is synergistic with that of garlic and cilantro. Researchers observed a dramatic reduction of 66.03% in blood lead levels in agroup of mice receiving chlorella extract concurrent with lead exposure.[6]

Garlic in a variety of forms has been shown by researchers to be beneficial in the management of heavy metal toxicity especially lead,[7] cadmium[8] and mercury.[9]

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) has the ability to interact with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and stimulate the body to produce glutathione enhancing cell survival after exposure to heavy metals or toxins.[10]

Alpha Lipoic Acid is mostly known for its attribute as a powerful antioxidant. However, it may also directly chelate heavy metals especially copper,[11] arsenic,[12] cadium[13] and to a small degree, mercury.[14]

Discussion:

Minerals are solid, crystalline substances, not of animal or vegetable nature. They cannot be synthesized by the body. Imbalances or deficiencies in minerals can affect the production of energy, the synthesis of blood, bones, and hormones, immune system and enzyme function, and reproduction. Balance, or the ratio of one mineral to another, is key to mineral utilization.

The bioavailability of mineral supplements is perhaps the most important consideration in selecting a formula. The body transports minerals across the intestinal walls by chelating or bonding them into amino acids. For greater bioavailability special processing is needed to create a stable bond between the mineral and amino acids. Albion Laboratories® uses patented processes to assure the bond stability. Some other products on the market purported to be chelates are merely complexed mixtures of proteins and minerals that lose stability during digestion and consequently have lower bioavailability.

The minerals in Essential Minerals differ from those in many formulas in that they are bound to the ligand, glycine. Unlike the ligand picolinic acid that gets excreted unchanged in the urine, the amino acid glycine has nutritional value in and of itself. This means that 100% of the compound has nutrient value.

Essential Minerals also stands apart from most other mineral formulas on the market because of its content of malic acid, lithium, and vanadium. Malic acid participates in the energy production cycle. A double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over study using 400 mgs of malic acid three times a day (approximately the same amount as in Essential Minerals) along with magnesium resulted in significant reductions in three measurements of pain and tenderness in subjects with primary fibromyalgia. Studies in Sweden demonstrated reduced content of high energy phosphate bonds in the muscles of individuals with fibromyaglia and theorized this to be one cause of the pain associated with the condition. As a result of malic acid’s role in energy production, NADH (which yields 3 ATPs) is formed and may potentially reverse this status in the muscles of these patients. Malic acid is also thought to increase energy levels in healthy humans.

Lithium and vanadium are known as ultra-trace elements. As yet, neither a human requirement for ultra-trace elements, nor deficiency symptoms have been demonstrated in humans. The insulin-like properties of vanadium have been demonstrated. Lithium regulates the neurotransmitter glutamate, acting to keep the amount between brain cells at a stable healthy level. Doses somewhat higher than those in this formula are used by some practitioners to treat bipolar disorders and autism. These ultra-trace minerals, as well as some of the others, could have very narrow margins between useful and toxic doses. However, Albion® amino acid chelates have been shown to have lower toxicity than any other form of inorganic mineral supplements.

Significant excretion of maganese, molybdenum, zinc, and lithium was seen in a preliminary clinical trial with LifeSpa’s Chelation Support™ an excellent companion interim formula. Examples of these conditions include senile dementia, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral and cardiac infarction, and even hemorrhoids. One of the anti-thrombotic enzymes produced in the body is called plasmin. Plasmin is responsible for digesting or breaking down fibrin. Hence, the term “fibrinolytic” is used to describe this kind of enzyme.

The research for a natural agent that has activity similar to plasmin has continued for many years. After trials of over 173 natural foods as potential thrombolytic agents, Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi at the Chicago University Medical School found, in 1980, what he had long been looking for. When he placed drops of a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food onto an artifi cial thrombus (fibrin) in a petri dish that was held at approximately body temperature (37°C), the thrombus around the food gradually disappeared and completely dissolved within 18 hours. That food was natto, a fermented cheese-like food that has been used safely in Japan for more than 1000 years. Dr. Sumi named the enzyme “nattokinase” which means “enzyme in natto.” According to Dr. Sumi, a 150 g portion of the food, natto, contains approximately 500 mg of nattokinase. It was later determined that Nattokinase actually has four times greater the fibronolytic activity than plasmin.[1]

How Nattokinase Works
Nattokinase enhances the body’s ability to dissolve blood clots in several ways. Not only is it able to potently decompose fibrin directly, but it also enhances the body’s production of both plasmin and other clot-dissolving agents, including (endogenous) prourokinase. As fibrin is being dissolved, levels of EFA (euglobin fibrinolytic activity) and FDP (fibrin degredation products) increase in the blood. Endothelial cells and/or the liver release TPA antigen (tissue plasminogen activator). The increase in these parameters allowed researchers to confirm theaction of nattokinase and also to determine that the activity lasts from eight to twelve hours.[2,3]

Research
Two small human trials and 17 other studies have been done on nattokinase. In a placebo-controlled study done by Dr. Sumi in which dogs were induced to have blood clots, oral administration of nattokinase (1gm nattokinase as four 250mg capsules) resulted in angiograms showing normal circulation and dissolution of the clot within five hours of treatment. In contrast, blood clots in the dogs receiving only a placebo did not show any signs of dissolution during the 18 hours following treatment.[4] Japanese researchers who studied nattokinase’s ability to dissolve a thrombus in the carotid arteries of the rats found that those given nattokinase regained 62% of blood flow, whereas those treated with plasmin regained only 15.8%.[5] Researchers from Oklahoma State University, Miyazaki Medical College and JCR Pharmaceuticals conducted a human study on 12 healthy volunteers (6 men and 6 women; ages 21-55 years). Before breakfast, each of the volunteers was given 200 grams of the food, natto. (This amount is equivalent to ~ 667 mg of the enzyme, nattokinase) Then, through a series of blood tests, the researchers tracked the fi brinolytic activity. On average, the volunteers’ ELT (a measure of how long it takes to dissolve a blood clot) dropped by 48% within two hours of treatment.

This heightened ability to dissolve blood clots was retained for 2 to 8 hours. In order to provide a control for the study, the same amount of boiled soybeans (non-fermented) was consumed by the volunteers. The same tests for fi brinolytic activity did not show any significant changes.[6] The Japanese have long believed that the food natto also helps to control blood pressure. In recent years, several clinical trials on animals and humans have confirmed this action. A wister rat study demonstrated on average a 12.7% decline in systolic blood pressure within two hours of a single administration of test extract directly into the peritoneum of the rats. These same researchers also confirmed the presence angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors within the test extract of natto.[7] The same extract was then tested on hypertensive human volunteers who took 30 grams of the extract for four consecutive days. In four out of five volunteers, the systolic blood pressure dropped an average of 10.9% and the diastolic dropped 9.7%.[7,8]

Researchers at Tottori University in Japan used nattokinase therapy to dissolve blood clots in the eyes. These are clots that hinder blood flow and weaken the optic nerve, causing blindness.

Discussion:
The thyroid is a small gland with a sizeable role in the body. Its primary function is the concentration of iodine and the production of crucial thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T4 is converted to T3 by the body. Between them, T3 is the more potent, biologically active hormone. It regulates the metabolic rate within cells and affects fundamental functions throughout the body. Thyroid hormone production depends on the presence of iodine and the amino acid L-tyrosine in adequate amounts. T4 contains tyrosine and four iodine molecules, while T3 contains tyrosine and three iodine molecules.
