Anxiety has become one of the most prevalent conditions I treat, along with fatigue and depression. The classic Western medical treatment for anxiety is to sedate the nervous system so one feels less stimulated or less anxious. This will in most cases relieve the symptoms, but the cause is rarely addressed. In many cases anxiety is caused by a lack of energy, not too much energy. A sedative usually resolves the symptoms, but leaves the individual with even less energy. It is understood in many traditional systems of medicine that the body needs sufficient vitality or energy to maintain normal moods. In fact the body uses this energy to sedate itself in stressful times and to maintain a stable mood. The most overlooked treatment for anxiety is in the rejuvenation of the nervous system rather than its sedation.
