Research on Panchakarma Posted on Sunday, February 18, 2007 10:19:41 PM
As we enter into the Spring season it is nature's design to initiate an internal cleanse. Due to this process the liver is heating up to start the detox process and the body becomes more suseptible to a detoxifiction cold this time of year. This is an essential time of year to do some sort of cleansing. See the short home cleansing article in the library on this site. Panchakarma is also indicated this time of year as it is the most powerful rejuvenation and detox available. Not only does it remove physical toxins but emotional toxins as well. These are called "molecules of emotion" and they lodge themselves in our fat cells with other very toxic chemicals. During the 2-1/2 hours of panchakarma treatments which can be seven days or more in a row, we prescribe specific yoga - breathing and meditation exercises done 3-5 hours a day, special diet and process journaling that are designed to open the subtle body system and release mental and emotional patterns that hold us prisoners to our physical, mental and emotional imbalances. Here are some research highlights on the Panchakarma process:
Decreases cholesterol, by lowering toxic lipid peroxide levels l Decrease the rate of platelet clumping and thus lymphatic congestion • Decreases 14 major toxic and cancer causing chemicals from body tissues including heavy metals, pesticides and other hazardous environmental chemicals • Significantly raised the good HDL cholesterols • Lowered diastolic blood pressure • Reduced free radicals which are the leading cause of all disease, cancer and death • Significant reductions in bodily complaints, irritability, bodily strain, and psychological inhibition, as well as greater emotional stability. • Decreased anxiety, aging and reduced doctors visits by 80%
My tongue become black color. I have metalic taste in my mouth. Because of dental problem I been on antibiotic for 10 days.
Could you help? Is my life in danger?

Susan has a good point to check the integrity of the mucus membranes of your intestinal track. Most often allergies and for sure excema starts in your digestive system and stagnates the lymph accociated with the gut and causes hypersenitivity reactions. I often with Amalaki for the heal the inside of the gut, Manjistha for the lymph and Neem for the rash. All are part of a spring cleaning program. You can take 2 of each after food 3x/day. If that doesnt work then we should do a phone consult.

There is usually a good reason as to why the body would begin to break down its own nerve tissue -- what we do in Ayurveda is diagnosis what is the underlying reason and a strategy to restore your body's ability to heal itself or at least be engaged in that process.

IBS is a very complex condition -- I would start with the Amalaki first 2 after meals and make sure that works well in reducing any abdominal pain. Once that is working then add Anxiety Free 2 2x/day after food. After that I may suggest a phone consult as things start to get real individualized after those two herbs.

My drs. want to put me on a high dose of hormones. I obviously do not want to. I just finished am ayurvedic cleanse with Pratima Skincare Clinic in NYC. I was eating a predominantly vegetarian diet. Could the high intake of complex carbs (plates of brown rice, beans, etc.) cause a hormonal imbalance? I intend on scheduling a phone consult as I have called the office, but I am in desperate advice as soon as I can get it. Any recommendations and advice would be really appreciated. I go in for an ultrasound tomorrow. Thank you.

Hi, I came across your site and was very interested. I live in California, and I thought I'd go get my mom to go over there for a while and I'd go visit you too. My mom has should visit a chiropractor cause her bones just crack all the time and we have scoliosis, and she also has various problems with hypertension, blood pressure, kidney stones, where she stops breathing for several minutes during the night.. (Is that suitable for panchakarma? Who is available to these treatments?) I just don't know much about anything and if this could even be worked out. It seems to me you need a evaluation before panchakarma if that (and it's a how many day process?), plus making appointments (if you had any), plus chiropractic? and then plane tickets too. Agh! Could somebody enlighten some of the situation? Thanks.

This is a great question. I lived there for many years and know the climate well. Even though it may seem like two seasons there are growing seasons that reflect the 3 season approach. The weather is cold in the winter and warmer foods are harvested. In the spring it is still the start of the major growing season and we should follow the spring diet and this is the best detox and alkaline rich time of the year.
I hope this helps.

Dr. Douillard,
I'm reading your book from Los Angeles and I wondered about our climate. In L.A. we seem to go directly from summer into fall around November, and from fall into summer in March. Average temperature is about 50 degrees at coldest and immediately jumps to 80 degrees with a few 75 days in Feb / March.
Does this affect what we should do seasonally at all? We have a rainy season that's quite "wet" during our "winter," and then the rest of the year is extremely hot and arid. It's like we only have two seasons here or something. We stay at a mild 80 degrees before we hit the 100s in the valleys. Not much in between like 50s or 60s.
What, if anything, would you recommend for going from winter into spring in such a climate? I apologize if this question has already been asked or is too long. I am very curious to know if it has any direct effect on diet as L.A. seems to have a very different climate than anywhere else I've lived.
Thank you for your time!

dr.douillard, last spring you suggested taking manjishta and liver repair for the vitiligo patches on my face. the dose seemed a bit strong for me, as i suffered from upset stomach, loose stool, and strange blister patches on my leg. (not sure if all related) i had to stop taking the herbs because i became pregnant. (then a miscarriage and i haven't taken anything since) it's spring again and i would like to take the herbs again because i still have some small patches on my face. what do you suggest? ( last time it was 3each 2x a day...i think) thank you!

This is a very complicated process that can work but is always unique to each person. I would have to do this after a thorough history -- the best way to proceed is with a phone consult- sorry there is just no simple quick response to you question.

Great question and thanks for the kind words. The symptom may linger if there is an underlying cause still to be treated -- so always treat the loudest imbalance a you wean off the treatment for the previous imbalance.
hope that helps

It is hard to say what that is -- the garlic ear oil wont hurt and is very worth a try. If it doesnt help - lets do a phone consult to try and figure out what is really causing it.

Typically solids shouldnt be started before 6 months -- it just may be too soon. As for your cleanse - The Short Home Cleanse will be fine on my web in the articles section -- but it may be wise to tailor one just for your needs.

Dr Douillard,
I recently completed your CD Ayurvedic Pulse Reading Course and I must extend a sincere thank you for the course. I have previously taken other pulse reading courses and I'm just amazed how well structured and efficient your course is.
I had a question regarding when to stop treatment for a particular subdosha, in order to move on to other imbalances. Do you recommend to stop when an imbalance is completely gone from the gap level? Or deep level? Or does one stop when some other subdosha imbalance screams louder, even if the imbalance is not completely gone?
Many thanks beforehand!

Dr. Douillard,
I have a 5 month old son and have recently started him on solids. I am wondering if there is an ayurvedic approach to this? What solids would you start him on first? I have been giving him rice cereal but he is getting constipated with foul gas. (I have also tried giving him sweet potatoes and pears but he didn't like them). His cheeks are drying out and his vata seems to be high. Do you have any suggestions. I have put a small amount of castor oil on the nipple to help with the constipation. I am also wondering if you have any suggestions for a small detox I could do this spring without affecting baby too much since I am still breast feeding?
thanks!

Prunes are OK for a short period of time but I would try to figure out what is causing the constipation. Make sure he is hydrated and try a daily oil masahe focusing around his belly.
If that doesnt work - perhaps a phone consult may be best.

I have read your 3-Season Diet book and with Spring coming I would like to start the plan but do not have the typical 9-5pm work week. Your book recommends having lunch be the largest meal and supper done by 6pm. Usually I do not get 'lunch' until 4-5pm and supper around 9pm. Any advice?

Hello Dr Douillard. I'm a yoga teacher and since I had become a mother I try to use the knowledge from this science to answer all my questions about my baby. I had just bought your book for kids health and I'm just amazed by your way to adapt ayurveda principles for children. I have been wondering if all your recommendations are good for little babies. Can I give turmeric, aswagandha, brahmi or any other ayurvedic herb to my 11 months old baby? What about Chyavanprash? My baby has been having some blood in stools for two weeks and her pediatrician says there is nothing to be worry about. Could you give me some advice about that? Is that something relative to her digestion? Could you recommend something to do? Many Thanks. Om Namah Sivaya.

Yes Chyavanprash is fine during breat feeding. How much depends on why she is taking it. But a tbs in the morning is a very safe dose.

Hi Michelle
Ashwaganda is heavy herb and can be somtimes hard to digest -- I only use an extract and even then dont use ashwaganda for colitis. I would start with Amalaki which heals the GIT first then we can go go from there. Take 2 after food and then perhaps we can do a phone consult.
Hope that helps.

Hello Dr. Douillard,
I am a student at Integrative Nutrition and heard you speak at our school in December. I became absolutely fascinated with your talk and with Ayurveda. I was wondering if you could reccommend a good ayurvedic doctor in the NYC area for a friend of mine who is obese and desperately needs to heal (he was in the emergency room a few days ago, due to pressure in his lungs, he is also asthmatic)I think it would be good for him to see someone in person. I appreciate your time in pointing me and him in the right direction.

Doctor, I have a 13 mo old who is terribly constipated. She goes daily, but it's VERY hard & she cries, struggles & is scared. We switched over to organic 2%milk (1 yr) from formula. She did have this problem exist prior, but not as bad. We tried soy milk but she broke out in a rash from it. We have her on(per day):cod liver oil 1 tsp, flax seed meal 1 tsp, flax seed oil 1 tsp, 2-4 oz prune juice (whatever we can get in her), from 4-6 oz water in addition to 28-32 oz milk, 1 tblsp stewed prunes plus she's on a probiotic. She eats a well balanced diet in addition to the above. We want to know if we should just increase what we are doing or try something new but are lost as her pediatrician will only prescribe a laxative & the homeopath wants to slowly change her entire diet (which I don't agree with) I feel we need more quick relief for her than that. She's 13 mos/25 lbs & I want to do what's safe for her. If we need to do a consult for more info, that's fine. Thank you, Debbie

I have a client who was diagnosed with 4 uterine fibroids and has 2 recommendations for surgery (to remove the uterus). She wants an alternative. I first recommended full panchakarma, but that doesn't fit right now. So I am recommending a cleanse, and Ayurvedic treatments and then some herbs for the liver, triphala, and I am stuck on which herbs for shrinking the tumors -Kachanar guggulu or Punarnavadi guggulu. I also considered shatavari but can this increase estrogen? I believe her to be a PK. Should I start the herbs with the cleanse or wait until the cleanse is finished? Any suggestions or comments or am I on the right tract? I was a student of yours at KSA. Thanks!

Dear Dr. Douillard,
A dear friend of mine directed me to your website. My husband suffers of panic attacks and anxiety and I was looking for an alternative to the Xanax the doctor prescribed.Xanax changes my husband's personality and makes him crush in a pool of sadness and despair. Because we're so tight with money I skipped the consultation- I'm a graduate student in chemical engineering and we live on my assistantship , visa won't allow my husband to work legally, and we don't want to mess with the law-and I bought the Activated VBJ and Ashwaganda. The problem is that I don't know how much to administer to my husband. He's 6'2", 210lbs., 33 years old, very athletic and healthy otherwise.
He has so much trouble going to sleep and controling his emotions whenever the sadness and fear strikes. I know you have a lot of experience and I would appreciate your input.
Thank you.
